Christ the King

Did you know that Christ the King Sunday or dominicakyriake celebrates the full authority of Christ as King and Lord of the universe. Officially called “The Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King,” it is celebrated on the Sunday before Advent.

The altar colours for the day are red or white and brings the cycle of the liturgical year to an end.                                                                                                                                                     It was Pope Pius XI who in 1925 inaugurate a new festival in honour of the Kingship of Christ.

It is also known as Stir-up Sunday being so called as the beginning of the collect for the day in the Book of Common Prayer, begins with the words, “Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord, the wills of thy faithful people”. But it has become associated with the custom of making the Christmas puddings on that day. Most recipes for Christmas pudding require it to be cooked well in advance of Christmas, so the collect of the day served as a useful reminder.

    Eternal Father,
whose Son Jesus Christ ascended to the throne of heaven
that he might rule over all things as Lord and King:
keep the Church in the unity of the Spirit
and in the bond of peace,
and bring the whole created order to worship at his feet;
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
